ANANTA World and Lore: Chaos, Rifts, and the A.C.D.

ANANTA's setting is built from a small number of firm ideas and a large deliberate blank. Chaos is real, its origin is not explained, and the agency meant to study it has already fallen apart by the time you arrive. Everything else is either readable from play or still unpublished.

Chaos is a phenomenon, not an explanation

Chaos is the game's blanket term for anomalous events and the creatures they produce. Official English material also uses the phrase Manic Chaos for the more violent manifestations. It behaves like a pollutant: it distorts space, erodes mental stability, and changes matter into something else.

What the game refuses to say is where it comes from. English community glossaries state plainly that the source is unknown, and the official material only describes effects. A popular Chinese explanation holds that Chaos is the physical residue of a city's emotional imbalance. That explanation has no source at all: it reads well, but it is not canon. Treat any origin story you see as fan theory until the game says otherwise.

Chaos is not the blue bar in combat

There are two things called Chaos in circulation, and they should not be mixed. The setting-level Chaos is the world's central disaster. Chaos Energy is the combat resource that fills a skill meter during a fight. One is a lore concept, the other is a UI element, and no official source connects them into a single system.

The same caution applies to Chaos Liquid, a term used in some Chinese coverage for the Captain's gravity ability. Official material describes the ability as telekinesis or gravity manipulation, not as a liquid, and the relationship between that and Chaos Energy has never been explained.

The A.C.D. has already failed

The Anomaly Countermeasures Division is the organisation you are supposed to lead. On the day you report for duty, it has effectively collapsed: staff are gone, resources are thin, and the remaining squad is held together by personality rather than procedure. That premise shapes the whole game, because it turns a government agency into a start-up.

It also explains why reputation matters more than rank. With no institutional backing, the Captain's social following becomes the recruitment channel, the permission system, and the pressure valve. You are not rebuilding a department through paperwork; you are rebuilding it by becoming famous enough that people answer the phone.

Rifts are random, not scheduled

Where Chaos leaks, space tears. These rifts appear underground, in ruins, in back alleys, high on structures, and along the coastline. They are not fixed dungeon entrances with a queue outside. Most function as small encounters with mobs and environmental interaction; the larger Manic-grade rifts can destabilise an entire city block and change what is physically passable.

The community treats rifts as the closest thing the game has to dungeons, but the official rules for spawning, levels, and rewards are unpublished. Do not expect a daily rift routine at launch, and be sceptical of any guide that lists rift timers.

Espers are a population, not a rarity tier

Espers are people who awakened abilities after exposure to Chaos. They are the main force resisting it, and they exist across every layer of society. Esper is a worldbuilding category, not a rarity, a class, or an element, and not every playable character is one.

Community sites that use Esper as a star rating are borrowing a familiar gacha structure the game does not have. The roster is unlocked through story and identity work, and there are no paid character pulls to rate.

Infinite Trigger is a job title

The Infinite Trigger is the A.C.D.'s designation for its most capable anomaly investigator, the person sent at the hardest incidents. The Captain is the player-side Infinite Trigger. Whether other characters such as Wei Yinglong or Richie hold the title has never been stated.

The term is often flattened in English coverage into a generic word for any playable Esper. That is a mistranslation. Use Infinite Trigger for the Captain's role and Esper for the wider population, and the lore stays coherent.

Meteor Power sits above ordinary Chaos

Later in the story, the term Meteor Power appears: a higher-order energy tied to the Meteor Calamity, more violent than ordinary Chaos and connected to the fate of Nova City. Testers describe it as a late-story concept rather than a launch mechanic.

Two factions orbit this material. The Black Metal Crew is a street-level armed gang that serves as an early antagonist. The Inumaki Syndicate is a cult that worships Chaos and wants rifts to expand rather than close. Both names are working translations, not official English branding.

The short production timeline

ANANTA was announced in August 2023 as Project Mugen. It was renamed and licensed in China in December 2024, ran multiple offline playtests through 2025, and was dated for 15 January 2027 at Gamescom in August 2026, where Chongxiao was revealed. That history explains why so much pre-2026 material describes a different game.

What is officially unknown

The origin of Chaos, the rules governing rift spawning, the structure of the main story, chapter names, whether choices branch, and the relationship between Chaos Energy and the setting's Chaos. None of these has an official answer, and any page that provides one is extrapolating.

The short version

Chaos is a fact with no explanation, the A.C.D. is a ruin you inherit, and rifts are weather rather than dungeons. ANANTA's lore works because it withholds the origin; the most useful thing a guide can do is mark the blank clearly instead of filling it in.
